Tutorial: How to Use the Database
The Medical Modeling and Simulation Database has over 200,000 entries. There are three basic approaches to searching the MMSD, Concept, Pattern and Boolean. If you would like to perform more advanced searches in the Database you may click on the Help of the search box where advanced search parameters are provided.
The three basic search functions will provide similar results with some changes in the ranking of the results.
Types of Searches:
Pattern Search:
Plain English entries that allows for mis-spellings. Ranks returned documents for relevance.
Most effective when:
- you are looking for a word that is a proper noun with variant spellings
- you are looking for a specific term or phrase, but you are not sure of the spelling
Concept and Boolean Searches may also be conducted. Concept is similar to Pattern and will search for the word entered. Boolean, is a search containing the words "and", "or" and "not".
Search Results Column Headings
When conducting a Search the results will appear with the column headings. Column headings are explained below. Above the Headings will be the number of results within the Search:

Rank: Is the relevance to the contents of the Search with 100 being the highest relevance. A Pattern Search of Vascular Surgery produces:
When you "click" on the Rank heading, the highest rank order of relevance will appear:
